Last updated: October 2026. This page explains what Keyword Genesis does with information when you use the free tools on this website or our Chrome extension. It is written in plain language, and it describes what our code actually does rather than what a template says.
The short version
We do not ask you to create an account. We do not ask for your name, your email address or any payment details, and we do not sell data to anyone. The keywords you look up are sent to Google Ads so it can answer you, and that is the main thing worth knowing.
Using the free tools on this website
When you run a search, three things happen to the information you typed.
- Your keyword, URL or text is sent to Google. The search volume, competition and cost per click figures come from the Google Ads API, so the words you enter are passed to Google to get an answer back. Google handles that data under its own privacy policy.
- Your IP address is used for a few minutes. When you tick the captcha we store a short-lived record that links your IP address to a one-time ticket, so a single captcha can cover a search that takes several requests. It expires after ten minutes and is then deleted automatically. We do not keep a log of searches made on this website.
- Nothing about the search is kept afterwards. Once the results are on your screen, the website has no record of what you looked up.
Google reCAPTCHA
Every search is protected by Google reCAPTCHA, which is what keeps the tools free and open without anyone scraping them. reCAPTCHA is loaded from Google and sets its own cookies. In the course of deciding whether you are a person, Google receives information about your device and your behaviour on the page. This is governed by the Google Privacy Policy and the Google Terms of Service.
The Global Keyword Volume tool
This tool translates your keyword before it asks Google for the local figures, so the keyword you type is also sent to a translation service. Translations are cached on our server for thirty days so the same word does not have to be translated twice. The cache holds the keyword and its translation only, with nothing that identifies you.
The Keyword Density Checker
If you give this tool a web address, our server fetches that public page and counts the words on it. We do not store the page or its contents. If you paste your own text instead, it is processed in the same request and then discarded.
When something goes wrong
If the Google Ads API returns an error, our server emails the site administrator so the fault can be investigated. That email contains the keyword that failed and the error message. It does not contain your IP address.
The Chrome extension
The extension works differently from the website, because it has to enforce a fair daily limit across many users. When you run a search through the extension, our server records:
- the keyword you searched for
- your IP address
- the location, language, search network and Google domain you selected
- whether it was a single or bulk lookup, and the time
- a token and a device identifier that the extension generates on first run
The token and device identifier exist so the extension can recognise the same installation again without asking you to sign in. They are not linked to your name or email, because we never collect either. We use these records to apply the daily search limit, to spot abuse, and to understand which features are used.
The extension does not read your browsing history, your bookmarks, your passwords, or the contents of pages other than the search results you are looking at.
What we never collect
- Your name, email address, postal address or phone number
- Payment or card details. The tools are free and there is nothing to pay for
- Passwords or login details for any service
- Health, financial or government identifiers
- Your browsing history
Cookies
We do not set advertising or analytics cookies, and we do not run a tracking pixel. Google reCAPTCHA sets its own cookies, as described above. WordPress may set a cookie if you log in to the site as an administrator.
Who else sees your data
We do not sell, rent or trade data. Information reaches only the services that are needed to answer your search: Google, for the Ads API and for reCAPTCHA, a translation service for the Global tool, and our own hosting provider, which stores the website and its database.
Your choices
Because we hold no account for you, there is usually nothing to delete. If you have used the extension and want the records tied to your token removed, email us at support@keywordgenesis.com with the token shown in the extension settings and we will delete them. You can also remove the extension at any time, which stops any further data being sent.
Children
These tools are made for people doing marketing and website work. They are not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 13.
Changes to this policy
If we add a feature that handles information differently, we will update this page and change the date at the top. Material changes will be described here rather than made quietly.
