What are LSI keywords?
In SEO articles, “LSI keywords” usually means the words and phrases related to your main keyword, the terms you would naturally expect on a page about that subject. On a page about running shoes that would be things like cushioning, trail, pronation or marathon training.
LSI keywords meaning: where the name comes from
LSI stands for latent semantic indexing, a document-retrieval technique patented in 1989. It was built to find documents on the same topic in small, fixed collections of text by spotting which words appear together. The SEO industry borrowed the name in the 2000s and used it as shorthand for “related keywords”, and the label stuck.
The honest part: Google does not use LSI keywords
Most pages selling an “LSI keyword tool” will not tell you this. Google’s own search advocates have said publicly and repeatedly that there is no such thing as LSI keywords in Google Search. The 1989 technique was never designed for a web of billions of constantly changing pages, and modern search uses language models that are far beyond it.
So why does this page exist? Because the idea behind the phrase is sound, even though the name is wrong. Covering the terms people genuinely use around your topic does help, not because Google runs latent semantic indexing, but because those terms are what real searches look like and what a complete page naturally contains.
What to use instead of an “LSI list”
Use related keywords backed by search data. Tools that invent “LSI keywords” often just scrape the words already on page one, which tells you what your competitors wrote, not what anyone searched for. The generator above does something different: it asks Google Ads which keywords are associated with your seed, and returns each one with its real monthly demand.
- Terms with their own demand: if a related term has meaningful volume, it may deserve its own section, or even its own page.
- Terms with little or no volume: still useful inside the copy, because they make the page read like it was written by someone who knows the subject.
- Questions: filter the results for how, what or why and you have your FAQ section, already validated by search volume.
How to use this LSI keyword generator
- Enter your main keyword, or up to 20 seeds, separated by commas.
- Choose the location and language you are writing for.
- Tick the captcha and run the search.
- Sort by volume, filter for the sub-topics you care about, and export the shortlist to CSV.
Latent semantic indexing and SEO
If you want the short version to remember: latent semantic indexing is a real piece of information-retrieval history, “LSI keywords” is an SEO myth built on top of it, and writing about your topic properly is what the myth was clumsily pointing at all along. Keyword research tells you which parts of the topic people actually search for, that is the part worth spending time on.
